6. The Leftovers

2014 saw Christopher Eccleston join an ensemble of actors in the HBO series The Leftovers. Based on Tom Perrotta's book, this series shows what happens three years after 140 million people have mysteriously disappeared around the world. Eccleston plays Reverend Matt Jamison who has his own, very certain, ideas about what the departure was and why only certain people were taken. In a programme where each episode focuses on a different character, Eccleston comes to the fore in the third episode of Series 1, Two Boats and a Helicopter, with a powerful performance that reveals a great deal about Jamison's past. In fact, Eccleston's acting was so good that he was nominated for the Best Supporting Actor award for the 19th Satellite Awards. The Leftovers also stars Liv Tyler so Eccleston isn't the only reason to watch it. However, the programme is created by Damon Lindelof, the man responsible for Lost, so audiences might reasonably expect the series to tease and tease and tease before having an ending that promises much but actually turns out to blow with chunks. Damn.
