10 Things You Didn't Know About Goodfellas

6. Al Pacino Was Offered The Role Of Jimmy Conway

It's hard to imagine anyone taking up the role of Jimmy Conway other than Robert De Niro, but if anyone had stepped in to fill the legendary actor's shoes, it would have had to of been another legendary actor. Al Pacino was actually approached to play the character of Conway before De Niro but subsequently turned down the role, fearing he would be typecast in the role of playing a gangster. Pacino's decision is hardly surprising though, he is still most famous for his roles in The Godfather Part I and Part II, but what makes the decision so dumbfounding is his role as Big Boy Caprice in Dick Tracy as, you guessed it, a gangster. Playing a crime boss in the film, his fears of not wanting to be typecast as the reason for his turning down a role in Goodfellas have subsequently fallen on deaf ears in the years following. Pacino himself has expressed his regret for not taking the role of Conway, and while Dick Tracy was a great film in its own right, its legacy is a far cry from the lasting appeal that Goodfellas has had with audiences.
