10 Things You Didn't Know About Masters Of The Universe
4. The Star Wars Stormtrooper Rip-offs Were Created For A Real Reason
With all its financial constraints and production problems, there is obviously a lot wrong with MOTU. Continuity errors, rushed special effects, glaring mistakes, you name it. But one aspect of the film still remains a sore spot for many fans and critics: the Stormtroopers. With action films in their prime in the 1980s thanks to heavyweights like Schwarzenegger and Stallone, director Goddard was aware that if the film was going to succeed, the action had to be good. But with the property being aimed at the under-12 age, Mattel was adamant that He-Man was not to be seen killing his enemies. Goddard suggested that if they wanted an action movie with an action star, that He-Man had to kick some ass. The compromise? Robot Warriors that look almost EXACTLY like stormtoopers. Fans of Star Wars were outraged, but their creation came about as Goddards way of being able to get He-Man to smash, fight and blast because he wasnt able to do that to anyone living. They are certainly a cheap alternative, but surely there was a better way to see the character truly live up to his most powerful man in the universe moniker. Unsurprisingly, when Mattel found out they were haemorrhaging money on the toy-line as the film was in progress, they told Goddard that he could have He-Man kill people, blood, guts, gore, sexjust make sure the movies a hit!
