10 Things You Don't Want To Admit About The Marvel Cinematic Universe

5. The Diversity Issue

The lack of a female-fronted Marvel movie is just the tip of the iceberg. Were it not for the technically green-skinned Hulk, Avengers could easily have been retitled White Dudes Save The Earth (Again): The Movie. Which would only have been slightly more of a mouthful than Marvel€™s Avengers Assemble, as it was named in the UK for Emma Peel reasons. Apart from Johansson€™s Widow, there€™s not been a single lead hero that wasn€™t a white male. Since its inception in 2008, the MCU has featured six films starring white men called Chris. It gets a little cloying after a while. Not that the rest of Hollywood is particularly the paragon of diversity, but you€™d hope that Marvel could do things a little differently, especially given the wide spectrum of characters featured in their comics. Things are set to get a little better with the upcoming Black Panther and Captain Marvel films, and the addition of the likes of Sam Wilson as The Falcon in The Winter Soldier was more than welcome, but the MCU could still do with leaning less heavily on WDSTE(A).
