10 Things Everyone Gets Wrong About The MCU

8. Every MCU Movie Has Been A Roaring Success

When people think about the Marvel Cinematic Universe's recent success both critically and commercially, they tend to come out with sweeping statements like "Marvel can do no wrong" and other all-encompassing cliches.

This is a gross exaggeration as the MCU had more than its fair share of teething problems during Phase One, which seems like so long ago that most people have forgotten all about them.

Sure, it got off to a flyer with the original Iron Man, which raked in $585.2 million at the box office and debuted to strong reviews, but by its own high standards, a few of the films that followed could be considered misfires.

The Incredible Hulk is the obvious movie to pick on. With an international haul of $263.4 million, this is the closest thing Marvel Studios has to a box office bomb and it also launched to mixed reviews.

Although financially successful, Iron Man 2 and Thor didn't attract glowing plaudits across the board like some of the movies which followed, both sitting in the mid-to-high 70s on Rotten Tomatoes, while Phase Two's Thor: The Dark World's reviews were about as lukewarm as they come.

It was only when the first Avengers film landed to the tune of more than $1.5 billion that the Marvel Cinematic Universe hit the stratosphere.

The success of the franchise's first big team-up paved the way for Marvel to experiment with its output, branching out into new genres and building an almighty web of interconnected stories. Only from this point on did the MCU consistently strike that sweet spot between critical acclaim and huge box office takings.
