10 Things Fanboys Won't Accept About 2016 Movies
3. There's Nothing Wrong With A Little Diversity
It can be quite upsetting to read the reactions from those who think comic book characters should never change race or gender, and often things can turn quite nasty very quickly.
This shameful kind of a reaction to changes in race have been apparent for years, with Idris Elba's casting as Heimdall as far back as the first Thor movie. Then we had a similar case with Michael B Jordan as Johnny Storm in last year's Fan4stic (great title), and here we are again with the change of race and gender with Tilda Swinton in Doctor Strange.
Not only did all of these actors do a fine-to-great job in their respective films, but a lot of these characters were originally written at a time when the majority of characters in any medium were white males. With the case of the Ancient One, take another look at that racist stereotype and it quickly becomes obvious why they changed it for the modern era.
These examples are bad, but by far the worst and most shameful example of fan resistance this year occurred with the Ghostbusters. There was so much abuse aimed at star Leslie Jones that she disappeared from social network and by all accounts seems to have been scarred by the whole, horrifying experience.
Certain elements are going to change, but as long as they aren't fundamental to the character's story or motivations then where's the harm? Passion is something to be admired yet clearly in these instances passion is used as an excuse for hatred, and for that the fanboys in question should be ashamed.
