Remember what I said about films from the sixties not being scary? Well, after a second attempt at another '60s Hitchcock film, my worst fears were confirmed and thus I added birds to my list of phobias. The Birds, released in 1963, is a movie centered on a San Francisco socialite who heads to California only to be met by a relentless, unexplained bird attack. This isn't a tale about a few pigeons flying around Trafalgar Square that you can shoo off in a few seconds, okay? This is closer to a never-ending barrage of avian doom. If you haven't seen the film, then you're probably thinking: "How scary can a bunch of birds be?" Watch the film... you'll change your mind. In order to scare his audience even further, Hitchcock decided to greet viewers who were leaving the first showing of the film with screeching bird noises coming from speakers hidden in trees and refused to finish the film with his typical "The End." Instead, he opted for nothing, with the intention of leaving his nervous viewers with a sense of unending terror. Nice guy, that Hitchcock.
