10 Things Hollywood Needs To Stop Doing (But Never Will)

7. Terrible Action Scenes

hungergamesreview600 Admittedly this one varies from movie to movie and it applies more to hand to hand and close quarter combat scenes, but it seems like more and more movies aren't even trying to put together well made action scenes anymore. Movies, such as the Hunger Games, are edited in a way that each frame lasts only a few seconds - the quickness of the succeeding frames makes it seem that way more is happening than there actually is. Shaky cam, used well in the Bourne movies and then never again, is being utilized more and more to hide the fact that not much is actually going on. Other movies have gone the other direction and substituted computer effects to create massive, if a little empty, spectacles. Despite the most effective fight scenes being the ones where it is very clear what is going on, clarity is more and more being replaced by empty chaos. I understand the reasons for this, as most actors don't actually know how to fight or even look like they know how to fight, and it's less expensive and time consuming to use shaky cam or special effects, but when foreign movies like the Raid: Redemption come out and show how to do good action scenes, it's hard to go back and watch the same mediocre Hollywood action.

I love movies, literature, history, music and the NBA. I love all things nerdy including but not limited to Star Wars, Star Trek, Lord of the Rings, and Firefly. My artistic idols are Dylan, Dostoevsky, and Malick and my goal in life is to become like Bernard Black from Black Books. When I die, I hope to turn into the space baby from 2001: A Space Odyssey.
