10 Things Hollywood Needs To Stop Doing (But Never Will)

8. Putting All Their Money Into Blockbusters

johncarter1 I realize that summer blockbusters make up most of the money taken in by movie studios, but it always makes me a little sad when I see movies that are obviously going to be bad, like Battleship, receive 200 million dollar budgets from movie studios, while directors like Malick, Anderson and others have to get by on budgets on 30 to 40 million (if they're lucky). While none of those directors would ever have need for that kind of money to tell their stories, it would still be interesting if directors like that received studio backing even approaching the most minor blockbuster movies. The budgets for the most mediocre films nowadays have increasingly ridiculous budgets and for every movie like The Avengers, which puts to good use its 200 million plus budget, there are movies like John Carter where you really can't tell what they did with their money. Being smarter with their funding and being more eager about funding proven filmmakers would go a long way towards improving modern movies.

I love movies, literature, history, music and the NBA. I love all things nerdy including but not limited to Star Wars, Star Trek, Lord of the Rings, and Firefly. My artistic idols are Dylan, Dostoevsky, and Malick and my goal in life is to become like Bernard Black from Black Books. When I die, I hope to turn into the space baby from 2001: A Space Odyssey.
