10 Things Man Of Steel 2 Needs To Be Great
8. Give Martha Something To Do
If there's one thing that the first Man of Steel really knocked out of the park, it's the cast. Amy Adams, Henry Cavil, Michael Shannon, Kevin Costner, all of them incredibly talented actors.
But chief among them was Diane Lane as Martha Kent. She brought a sense of motherly care and genuine love to a role that very easily could have been a by-the-numbers cliche. But while her performance was powerful, the film had little for her to do other than console Clark when he's distraught.
Sadly, BvS made things even worse, giving her little-to-no-agency, making her a damsel in distress, and (worst of all) making her first name the subject of the film's biggest WTF moment. And Justice League essentially just had her to feature a plot about her losing her house so that Batman could save her from debt...?
Man of Steel 2 needs to give Martha Kent something to do. She deserves redemption after everything she's had to slum it through, and shifting more weight to Diane Lane's acting chops would be a smart choice. She's more than capable and is currently being utterly wasted by the material, no matter how hard she tries.
