10 Things MCU Phase 3 Must Avoid (And Why)
2. Turning Captain America Gay
There has been a significant campaign in recent weeks for Captain America to come out as gay in a future movie, with the hashtag #givecaptainamericaaboyfriend picking up significant traction online.
The call for pop-culture as a whole to feature more LGBT characters is certainly noble and reasonable, but to transform a pre-existing character's sexual identity? It would seem forced and even token to do so.
This stems from a general recent phenomena where, thanks to the likes of Twitter and Instagram, audiences feel more closely connected to the creators of their preferred art. This gives them a certain sense of entitlement, that they are free to request changes to the material rather than merely accept the art as it is or simply not pour money into it.
It's just a matter of time before we get a major gay superhero on-screen, as we should, but giving Captain America a boyfriend would feel majorly shoehorned. Plus, most of the hetero romances in the MCU are already pretty terrible, and we really don't need more of this fantasy shipper nonsense.
