Believe it or not, but Fifty Shades began life as a piece of Twilight fan fiction James wrote under the title of Master of the Universe, with the two central characters being Bella and Edward from the Twilight novels. However, after the sexual content of her story raised eyebrows with some readers, she retooled the story as Fifty Shades Of Grey, removing it from the fan fiction websites and re-posting it on her own site, with the characters of Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele being born. Little of Bella and Edward's personality traits, however, had been changed at all. And the rest, as they say, is history.
