10 Things You Need To Know About Fifty Shades Of Grey

3. The BDSM Community Already Hates It

Another problem with James' source material and, as a result, this movie, is that the real-life BDSM community largely despises it. Why, you ask? Many BDSM enthusiasts claim that the novel projects a false image of what BDSM really is, promoting it as something to allure impressionable young girls and inexperienced women who may as a result find themselves in over their heads when the reality of how dangerous BDSM can be becomes apparent. Furthermore, there's been a vocal online response about the series' lack of detail about the safety measures put in place to minimise any significant physical injury, instead simply emphasising the steamy danger element in a way that's not truly reflective of how the practise takes place in real life. Of course, in an ideal world, nobody would dare use a silly book or movie as a how-to guide on anything, but people will take what they read and see from this story and inevitably try it out for themselves. As a result, the movie probably should make at least a cursory effort to correct the book's wrongs and depict the BDSM world with a little more transparency, not that it's likely to happen.
