10 Things Nobody Wants To See In Indiana Jones 5

4. Relentless References To Previous Movies

Paramount Pictures

One of the joys of the first two Indy sequels in particular has been the callbacks to prior movies, but in a manner that wasn't too over-the-top or distracting from the focal narrative. Crystal Skull just about got away with milking the nostalgia as it had been almost two decades since the last film, even if it arguably went OTT with the Raiders warehouse and lingering nods to both Henry Sr. and Marcus Brody.

There's understandable worry that, as another decade-plus will have passed since Crystal Skull, Indy 5 will go back to the old well once again for overblown nods to all the classic Indy iconography: rolling boulders, snakes, exotic food, a giant henchman getting brutally murdered, and so on. If Spielberg goes overboard, it's going to feel grating and obnoxious rather than warmly familiar.

How Likely Is It?: To an extent, it's inevitable, especially as Star Wars: The Force Awakens proved that Harrison Ford + a movie full of homages equals box office dynamite. Don't expect a fifth film to let up on dredging up some of the series' greatest hits, as filmmakers and studio executives are now acutely aware of the power of nostalgia and the value of a safe, easily digestible product. 8/10
