While a lot of people online are quick to blame everyone from George Lucas to Kathleen Kennedy and Rian Johnson for the franchise's failings. In reality, it's those fans who fall into the "toxic" category that arguably deserve to take the blame for how things have gone wrong in recent years.

The online-driven toxic backlash to diverse characters like Finn and Rose receiving the spotlight in The Last Jedi saw them pushed to one side in The Rise of Skywalker, with Kelly Marie Tran completely sidelined and forgotten about as Lucasfilm scrambled to make the most vocal fans happy (that also explains many of Episode IX's cringe-worthy, fan-service moments).

Moving forward, it's impossible to imagine Lucasfilm doing anything other than playing it safe with these movies. Love or hate The Last Jedi, at least Johnson took some risks and did something new. As soon as Solo and Rogue One directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller and Gareth Edwards tried to shake things up... they were replaced by other filmmakers and their movies were subject to reshoots.

So long as this small, but extremely vocal, group of toxic fans continue attacking female characters and people of colour, not to mention anything that isn't "classic" Star Wars, these movies are as good as doomed. They're definitely a minority, and most fans have embraced this modern new direction; it's just a shame how much traction what they say often receives.
