10 Things That Annoy You About New Star Wars That Didn't Bother Original Trilogy Fans

3. Leia Has Force Powers

Two of the previous complaints on this list come together in one of the more derided moments of The Last Jedi. At the height of the dramatic scene in which Kylo wrestles with whether to shoot his mother out into space (before another pilot decides to do it for him), audiences were confronted with what became known as "the Mary Poppins scene."

Having been blasted from the bridge of her Star Cruiser, General (formerly Princess) Leia floated out into the frozen vacuum of space only to suddenly use the Force somehow to fly herself back onto the ship, much to the astonishment of Poe and the Resistance crew. "But how does Leia know how to use the Force?" certain audience members demanded with ire, adding the now familiar refrain of "she hasn't had the proper training" (whatever that might consist of).

Leia using the Force is nothing new, though. The blood of Anakin Skywalker runs in her veins as much as Luke's after all, and we've already discussed how naturally he took to space magic powers without much in the way of "proper training."

How do those fans who perceive the Leia Poppins moment to be the first manifestation of her Force powers explain the end of The Empire Strikes Back in which, before we ever learnt of her Skywalker heritage, Leia was able psychically to connect with Luke as he called for help when hanging from the bottom of Cloud City?

In both Return Of The Jedi, in which she can magically sense her twin's presence on Endor, and The Force Awakens, in which she can sense her son murdering her husband on a distant moon the moment that it happens, Leia demonstrates a deep connection with the Force. Her ability to use it to save herself in The Last Jedi should only come as a surprise to people who paid no attention to her behaviour first time around.
