10 Things That The Batman Gets Absolutely Right

8. It's Incredibly Dark

The very first scene sees the Riddler murdering the mayor with a carpet tool, so that’s a pretty promising start in establishing tone, right?

We don’t see as much blood as you may imagine in the film, and this is for the purpose of keeping the rating down, but this doesn’t mean that the atmosphere isn’t super dark. Matt Reeves sustains this intense vibe throughout almost the entire three hours, not giving you even a second of sweet respite.

The very best iterations of Batman tend to be on the darker side, and that is because realistically it’s the most appropriate tone for the story that is being told. There’s no way that the Dark Knight could be a happy, well-adjusted bloke and have the mythos still exist in the same way.

Riddler even goes as far as to say that he’s partially inspired by Bats himself, and when you’re gonna be making statements and comparisons like that you need some backing to it. When it comes to showing Riddler’s ability to recruit other wrong’uns and film his exploits, the videos themselves are jarringly realistic – albeit with a superhero twist; both our heroes and our villains have a very dark side that lurks barely below the surface.
