10 Things We Actually Wanted From The Star Wars Sequel Trilogy

5. A Fully Planned Out Story

It was stated by Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy back in 2015 that The Force Awakens' creator J. J. Abrams had spoken at length with the director who would be following his first Sequel entry, Rian Johnson, with The Last Jedi helmer also doing the same with one-time The Rise of Skywalker director Colin Trevorrow in a bid to create a smooth director transition from one Episode to the next.

That worked out a treat, didn't it?

Rather than producing a set of films that all possessed their own distinct identity whilst simultaneously building towards the same destination, Johnson's bold yet divisive The Last Jedi in particular felt like a film that had next to no interest in sticking on the path Abrams had nudged it onto at the end of Episode VII.

And Trevorrow ultimately being replaced by Abrams as Episode IX director later down the road, soon resulted in The Rise of Skywalker becoming a movie-long mission to stubbornly steer the Skywalker Saga ship back in the direction he'd originally intended it to go.

While you can see where Disney and Lucasfilm were coming from when putting the pieces in place for this particular trilogy, feeling that these three chosen directors could all collaborate and create something special with their unique voices, the lack of a basic plan as to where the action needed to go across the three Episodes left the hit-and-miss trilogy often feeling like it was making it up as it went along.
