10 Things We Learned From Kevin Smith On Joe Rogan's Podcast
4. He Genuinely HAS Made A Movie For Fans
There are essentially two reasons why Smith is marketing The Jay & Silent Bob Reboot the way he has been - i.e. by taking it on the road and playing it to audiences in individual theatres rather than setting up a distribution deal.
The first reason is money. Distribution into cinemas costs a lot. Smith says on the podcast that he just doesn't have the marketing budget for that, so instead he and Jay Mewes have embarked on a 63 date tour. Gruelling isn't the word.
But the other side of that is that he knows for a fact that the people coming to see his movie are the exact people it's been made for. There's no crossover into casuals with cheap tickets or looking to kill time without a clue of the film. It means his audience is a hardcore one everywhere he goes and the experience is incredible every time. He says it's also incredibly good for his ego - "eventising" the film, as he calls it, makes it like stand-up and it's a really genius thing to do.
It's pretty lucky he actually likes the film, given how much he's seeing it. He also confirmed that the film will hit cinemas in a more traditional release, but that the usual issues of losses at the box office won't be an issue as the tour has covered the finances.
