10 Things We Learned From The 6-Minute Ant-Man Trailer
9. The Future Ant-Man Is A Good Prisoner
The six-minute trailer builds on some footage seen in previous trailers, especially the second TV spot. The prison fight sequence reappears, but with the extended run time we see Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) suddenly stop fighting and give his sparring partner a hug. It turns out the two of them are friends and this fight is more of a play-fight, a way of saying goodbye when a prisoner leaves jail. Apparently this is a thing prisoners do? It's not clear how widespread this custom is meant to be. Maybe it's just a peculiar form of macho bonding that Scott and his friend decided on. Nevertheless, it's a good choice. It plays with the expectation that Scott, as a criminal, may not be that likable of a guy and instantly subverts it. Right from the start, you like Scott, and that's essential to a movie where you spend two hours thinking about his welfare. Immediately thereafter, you meet Luis, Scott's best friend, so it becomes clear that Prison Buddy isn't an outlier, either. Scott just makes friends wherever he goes, even if where he goes is the slammer.
