In Steven Spielberg's mind, there was no other man who could possibly play Henry Jones than, in his words "the best James Bond", Sir Sean Connery. Despite being only 12 years older than Harrison Ford, Connery was totally believable as the father of the adventuring archaeologist and brought with him a sense of weight to the film that it sorely needed for a third instalment.

More than his acting chops, Connery also gave his input when the script was revised alongside writer Jeffery Boam, specifically when it came to the comedic moments in the film. The majority of his contributions were the interactions between father and son, even down to Henry calling Indy "Junior".

He also suggested a complete rethink of Henry's character from being a bitter old man to an eccentric explorer-type. Connery was apparently furious when he saw the original incarnation of the character and demanded he not only be changed, but appear 20 pages earlier in the script.

All of his contributions worked like a charm, and Henry Jones Sr. became one of the most popular characters in the series.
