5. He Initially Turned Down The Role Of The Sheriff Of Nottingham

Even though Alan Rickman's performance of the Sheriff Of Nottingham in Kevin Reynold's Robin Hood: Prince Of Thieves is one of his most beloved, the English actor actually turned down the role not once, but twice.

It was only when Rickman was told he could have carte blanche on his interpretation (essentially meaning complete and utter creative control) that he accepted, subsequently creating of the most iconic movie villains of the nineties. It's incredibly interesting to see what Rickman came up with when handed the reigns and not heavily directed. It just goes to prove how strong an awareness the man had of performance.
