10 Things You Didn't Know About Amanda Seyfried

6. She Originally Auditioned For The Role Of Regina In Mean Girls

Though Amanda Seyfried is now considered rather inseparable from her role as Karen Smith in Mean Girls, she originally auditioned for a different part: that of head Plastic Regina George, a role that was ultimately won by one Rachel McAdams (and rightly so). Mark Waters, who directed the film, explains how it went down:
"The person who was neck and neck for the role of Regina - and we agonized over which one we were going to cast - was Amanda Seyfried. She tested for Regina and was kind of brilliant, and very different than Rachel's approach. She played it in a much more ethereal but still kind of scary way. She was more frightening, but oddly, less intimidating."
Later, the producers suggested that Seyfried audition for the part of Karen instead, feeling that her "spacey and daffy sense of humor" made her more suitable for the character. And the rest, as they say, is history.
