Casual readers assume that Scott's powers were uncontrollable by their nature. The common misunderstanding is even true of some of the writers, particularly for adaptations of the books. In the 90s animated series, Rogue was unable to control Cyclops' powers when she absorbed them. But because she never received the same brain injury, this shouldn't have been the case. The reality is much more complex. When Cyclops was a child, his parents were abducted by the alien Shiar while flying their plane. In order to save their sons, they strapped Scott and his younger brother Alex into the last parachute. The pair made it out safely, although Cyclops suffered a severe concussion on landing. Cyclops is unable to shut off his optic blasts at will because of the damage of this impact. As a result, he must wear a visor or glasses with ruby quartz lenses that block the beams.
With a (nearly) useless degree in English literature and a personal trainer qualification he's never used, Freddie spends his times writing things that he hopes will somehow pay the rent. He's also a former professional singer, and plays the saxophone and ukulele. He's not really used to talking about himself in the third person, and would like to stop now, thanks.
