As we've just learnt, Harrison Ford's cool and charm is integral to Han Solo's success, so it seems completely ridiculous now that George Lucas originally wanted the character to be a green-skinned Jedi - with gills in place of a nose. The early drafts of the film contained an awful lot of crazy material, but this is one of the oddest; no matter the role this Han played, he'd be nothing like the scruffy nerf-herder we know. Over time, though, Lucas changed his mind, decided he would be better as a human, working down the alien until he just got the pirate essence, eventually describing him as "A cowboy in a starship." The original version of Solo later featured in a comic adaptation of The Star Wars, based on Lucas' early scripts. Having Christopher Walken as Han Solo is one thing, but the fact that the character could have been a Force-using fish-man is pretty hard to comprehend.
