2. Han And Chewie: The Origin Story
Earlier I mentioned the deleted scene from Revenge of the Sith that would have detailed Han and Chewie's backstory. Well, since that was cut it was wiped from continuity, so the spin-off novels were free to come up with their own explanation. Since the new trilogy started, the books themselves have been made non-canon, but their version of how the two became best friends is still worth a mention. According to the books, they meet when Han is a young Imperial pilot who finds a spaceship full of Wookie slaves. He is ordered to skin a helpless and wounded Chewbacca, but Han refuses. From this day on, Chewbacca swears a life debt to Solo and never leaves his side again. This annoys Han at first, but when Chewie defends him from being attacked, after he is found cheating at cards, Han realises that the Wookie has got his back. The Han Solo prequel film will no doubt come up with its own explanation for the pair's meeting, but it could do a lot worse than take inspiration from this touching and fitting origins story.
