10 Things You Didn't Know About Iconic Movie Character Costumes

1. Captain Jack Sparrow's Hat Was Made With Rubber

Captain Jack Sparrow of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise is well-known for his impeccable fashion sense. With his thick black eyeliner, decorative dreadlocks and tastefully tattered jacket, Johnny Depp certainly makes a convincing pirate, but it is the grimy cap that perpetually sits atop his head that makes him universally recognisable as Sparrow.

To look at Sparrow's famed hat, it is easy to believe that it is made purely from leather, and this was originally the case. However, a new hat was created for Depp during filming to replace its leather counterpart, because the actor kept knocking the item of clothing overboard.

As water damages leather, it is safe to say that the wardrobe department were unimpressed by Depp's antics. Around ten caps in, they decided it was necessary to have a more durable hat that did not constantly need to be replaced. So, that is how Sparrow's best-known accessory came to be made from rubber instead of leather.
