Believe it or not, but musical genius Johnny Marr - best known as the songwriter and lead guitarist for '80s rock band The Smiths - found his way onto the Inception soundtrack at the request of composer Hans Zimmer, and can be heard across the span of the movie delivering his iconic guitar twangs.

And as soon as you hear that it's Marr, it's impossible to unhear it, of course, which Marr credits to Hans Zimmer, who he claims "allowed him to be himself."

Marr used a 12-string guitar, and insisted on delivering simple and melancholic tones throughout to emphasise the state of mind that Cobb - the lead character played by Leonardo DiCaprio - experiences.

"You've got this character who all the way through the film has this underlying turmoil," Marr said on his contributions to the score; there's no denying that they helped to capture the film's dream-like tone.
