10 Things You Didn't Know About John Carpenter

8. He Directed A Godzilla Fan Film

Carpenter is a big fan of Japan€™s favourite rampaging monster; he owns every movie, collects Godzilla toys and even attempted to direct an American version back in the eighties. His love for the monster and sci-fi in general fuelled most of lot of his early short films, which had delightful titles like Sorcerer From Outer Space, Revenge Of The Colossal Beasts and Terror From Space. His first proper student film was Gorgo Versus Godzilla from 1969, which pitted the big guy against Gorgo, his generic British rip-off. The film was a rough amateur effort, shot in 8mm black and white with no sound, and featuring stop motion effects for the title fight. Don€™t be looking through YouTube for it, however, since Carpenter is so embarrassed by the short he€™s made sure no-one can ever watch it. The film has become a holy grail to Carpenter fans, but unless he has a drastic change of heart, it shall remain under lock and key.
