Despite that early, unqualified success (although it's a shame she never crossed paths with Big Bird), it took a few more years for Dawson to find her footing in the acting game. As it happens, that foot-in-the-door story is almost entirely random, one of those fortuitous events that romantic Hollywood dreams are made of. ...Sort of. Rosario Dawson's breakthrough role was in Larry Clark's Kids, the photographer's directorial debut and the first filmed script by future Spring Breakers director Harmony Korine. Dawson played Ruby, a promiscuous 15-year-old who accidentally uncovers an AIDs diagnosis in one of her friends. Clark's photography career had him taking snapshots of under-age teens smoking, drinking, doing drugs and crackin' on with each other, and he wanted a similar sense of authenticity to Kids so he cast actual, well, kids. Dawson was was discovered while sitting on the stoop of her parents apartment, after seeing Vibe was filming on the street.
