10 Things You Didn't Know About Starship Troopers
3. The Wrong Girl Dies
An integral part of Starship Troopers' plot is the love triangle between Johnny Rico, Carmen Ibanez and Dizzy Flores. From the start of the film, we're shown that Dizzy is infatuated with Johnny, despite him and Carmen clearly being an item.
We follow Johnny as he signs up to the Mobile Infantry (in a bid to keep in contact with Carmen), where he falls back in with DIzzy, is eventually dumped by the career-driven Carmen, and finally hooks up with Dizzy before her untimely death.
Somewhere in amongst all that drama, there's still time for a jealous rivalry and heated confrontation between Johnny and Zander (Carmen's flight instructor and new love interest).
It seems filmgoers in 1997 weren't ready for a strong, independent and career focussed young woman in their action films and test audiences were incensed by Carmen's casual attitude towards her boyfriend, especially her blatant flirtations with Zander and subsequent ditching of Johnny to focus on her career.
We won't publish the comments here (some are particularly NSFW) but it suffices to say that audiences were polarised across all genders, races and creeds in their vehement hatred of Carmen, convinced she should have been the one to die, not Dizzy.
