10 Things You Didn't Know About The Mad Max Trilogy

3. The Sandstorm In Beyond Thunderdome Was Real

We've seen at least one impressive sandstorm in an action film recently - Tom Cruise got caught up in one whilst chasing bad guys in Dubai in Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol. It's highly likely that another will crop up in Mad Max: Fury Road, certainly if the trailer is anything to go by. For the sandstorm scene in Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome George Miller didn't have the option of reverting to computer generated imagery to achieve the effect, so he did what any insane film director would do - he filmed a real one instead. Simply standing a safe distance from the aforementioned sandstorm wasn't enough for Miller - he had to go one further and fly a camera plane directly into the storm before it finally caught up with the crew and forced them to ride it out in their cars.
