5. Sharon Stone and Spetters (try saying that quickly)
Prior to being cast in Total Recall, Sharon Stone hadnt exactly set the world alight. Having got her first break in Woody Allens Stardust Memories, she spent most of the 1980s drifting between TV work and action-adventure B-movies like King Solomons Mines, many of which were shallow attempts to cash in on the success of Indiana Jones and Romancing the Stone. When her agent first offered the role of Lori (Quaids wife), she turned it down, saying that she couldnt go on doing action movies and felt like a dodo. Luckily, her agent mentioned Verhoeven, whose Dutch-language coming-of-age drama Spetters was one of Stones favourite films, leading her to read the script and give a knock-out audition.
