10 Things You Didn’t Know About Total Recall

5. Sharon Stone and Spetters (try saying that quickly)

Prior to being cast in Total Recall, Sharon Stone hadn€™t exactly set the world alight. Having got her first break in Woody Allen€™s Stardust Memories, she spent most of the 1980s drifting between TV work and action-adventure B-movies like King Solomon€™s Mines, many of which were shallow attempts to cash in on the success of Indiana Jones and Romancing the Stone. When her agent first offered the role of Lori (Quaid€™s wife), she turned it down, saying that she couldn€™t go on doing action movies and €œfelt like a dodo€. Luckily, her agent mentioned Verhoeven, whose Dutch-language coming-of-age drama Spetters was one of Stone€™s favourite films, leading her to read the script and give a knock-out audition.
