6. Food Poisoning on Location
Most of the location shooting for Total Recall was done in Mexico City, with Verhoeven closing off whole sections of the citys subway system. Over the course of filming for several months, the entire crew got food poisoning at some stage except for Arnie and Shusett. Arnie had planned ahead, having had a bout of food poisoning while shooting Predator in similar locations three years earlier. He insisted on having all his food either canned or flown in from America. Shusett went so far as brushing his teeth with bottled water and insisting on daily shots of Vitamin B12. Verhoeven was so badly affected that they had an ambulance on standby, feeding him fluids in between takes.
