10 Things You Learn Rewatching Goldfinger
6. Bond Hates The Beatles
One easily-missed quote during Bond's post-coital canoodle with Jill Masterson is his barbed criticism of The Beatles.
Bond says, "My dear girl, there are some things that just aren't done, such as drinking Dom Perignon '53 above the temperature of 38 degrees Fahrenheit. That's just as bad as listening to the Beatles without earmuffs!"
Did screenwriters Richard Maibaum and Paul Dehn have something against The Beatles and decided to use Bond as a mouthpiece? Or was it merely an attempt to further cement Bond as part of "the establishment" which so virulently stood against The Beatles? Either way, it's weird.
It's stranger when you consider that Bond's first film, Dr. No, was released the very same day as The Beatles' first single, "Love Me Do".
Whatever the creative intent of the line, it makes Bond seem crusty and out-of-touch, especially in a modern context where The Beatles' legacy is inarguable.
