10 Things You Missed In Star Wars Deleted Scenes
5. Luke Surrenders His Lightsaber To Vader Mid-Battle - Return Of The Jedi
In the case of this deleted scene, you actually had no choice but to miss it considering that it's never actually been officially released in any capacity.
All the same, keen-eyed fans might notice a curiosity during Vader and Luke's (Mark Hamill) duel in Return of the Jedi.
While Luke is hiding underneath the staircase and Vader searches for him, Vader can be briefly seen in possession of Luke's own lightsaber, which is holstered on his own attire.
This obviously makes no sense within the context of the final film, because how would Vader ever have gotten hold of Luke's weapon, especially while it appears that Luke still has it?
But this wasn't so much a sloppy continuity error as a result of the film's editorial process. Originally, director Richard Marquand filmed an extended action beat where, while hiding under the stairs, Luke rolls his lightsaber across the ground to Vader, who picks it up.
As for how the saber gets back in Luke's hands? He uses the Force to grab it from Vader.
For whatever reason - possibly pacing - this was cut from the final film, though was kept in James Kahn's novelisation, which was presumably working from Lawrence Kasdan and George Lucas' original script.
