5. Lex Luthor Was A UFOlogist (Amongst Other Things)

Abrams was pretty committed to basically ignoring everything that had ever happened in any Superman story before. At least, it seems that way based on his characterisation of Lex Luthor, who went from being an evil scientist entrepreneur guy to a government agent obsessed with UFOs. Like, really obsessed. To the point where he barely seems involved with the actual plot of Superman: Flyby (such as it was), and instead spent most of his time examining a crashed Kryptonian ship. Because he was so crazy for aliens. He probably teamed up with the bad guys at some point but the ultimate twist at the end of the film? That Kryptonian ship was his! Lex Luthor is a Kryptonian now. Which, erm, robs him of his entire motivation for hating the alien Superman. Great job J.J.
