After the first three Pirates instalments' director, Gore Verbinski, was unavailable to direct On Stranger Tides due to commitments to animated film Rango, Disney brought aboard Rob Marshall. For the fifth film, Disney has again decided to infuse the franchise with new blood - meet your new Pirates directors, Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg. Rønning and Sandberg hail from Norway and already have significant experience under their belts, directing the first two episodes of Netflix's new series Marco Polo and also the film Kon-Tiki, about the attempt to sail from South America to Polynesia on a small raft. Kon-Tiki ended up being nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Film, so there's some pedigree here.
