10 Things You Need To Know About The DC Extended Universe

3. Zack Snyder Is Definitely Embracing The Comic Books

Talking of Man Of Steel, the fact that it was marketed in a way that made it look like the Batman Begins of Superman movies meant many were disappointed when it ended up being a fairly standard superhero summer blockbuster. That could explain why critics were split (the movie holds a 56% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes) and why the movie seemed to be struggling to decide whether it was going down the dark and gritty route of The Dark Knight Trilogy or bringing the comic books to life like Watchmen. With Batman V Superman, it seems Snyder may have finally found the right balance. For all the talk of the DC Extended Universe movies being grounded in reality, the Comic-Con trailer included some huge Easter Eggs for fans - Jason Todd's Robin costume and Batman striking that famous pose from The Dark Knight Returns - while also showing off a serious enough tone to justify all that talk of these movies being dark and gritty. Suicide Squad (possibly the darkest PG-13 comic book movie ever) appears to be doing the same. This is something no doubt helped by the fact that Snyder is a huge fanboy. He understands what makes these characters tick, and with so many homages to the source material in Batman v Superman, it's almost guaranteed that he's going to deliver a movie which geeks like me are going to love. As amazing as Nolan's work with Batman may have been, the comics ultimately didn't factor into that series in a significant way, and so it could be Snyder who is responsible for delivering the definitive take on the iconic hero.
