While it technically received a limited release in the States at the end of 2016, The Love Witch comes out in the UK on the 10th of March 2017 (just a few days before it hits shop shelves on DVD and Blu Ray). As such, it flew a little under the radar last year, as Oscar buzz began to shake the foundations of the film industry, and every media outlet was scrambling to publish their end of year lists.
The Love Witch should be sought out purely on the basis of its aesthetic allure. This sly, feminist picture is an authentic homage to 1960s thrillers and pulpy crime novels. Written and directed by Anna Biller, it stars Samantha Robinson as the titular Love Witch, a modern say spell caster who uses magic to seduce and infatuate men.
It’s a campy Technicolor curio that really has to be seen to be believed – its trailer is so convincing that you almost think you’re watching a recently restored 60s B-movie.
