In the beginning of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Earth's mightiest heroes seemed invincible. Whether they were facing robots, aliens, or the reviews of Thor: The Dark World, it seemed the gung-ho Avengers would always be here to safeguard, not just the world, but the universe.

But one by one, the good guys started to fall. After Phil Coulson, Frigga, Peggy Carter, and Quicksilver shuffled off their mortal coil, we knew it was only a matter of time before an A-List superhero was killed off.

So, the second that Captain America: Civil War was announced, millions of fans safely convinced themselves the threequel would end with an Avenger pushing up the daisies. Because Cap was murdered in the Civil War comic mini-series, many believed the movie would wrap up the same way.

Because the MCU is known for catching fans out, some suspected Civil War would subvert expectations by killing off Tony Stark. Once again, this didn't seem like an impossibility. Before the movie was set in stone, Robert Downey Jr's contract expired and he strongly considered leaving the franchise.

Luckily, Kevin Feige convinced the face of the MCU to extended his contract, allowing him to stay. Although Civil War's final battle concludes with Iron Man being defeated, he wasn't killed off... at least, not in that movie.
