10 Times 90s Cinema Tried To Reboot 60s Television (And Failed)

1. The Saint (1997)

Lost In Space
Paramount Pictures

Fresh off his turn as The Dark Knight in Batman Forever, which one could argue was another '60s reboot as it took on the more campy elements of the Adam West show rather than the Tim Burton darkness that preceded it, Val Kilmer donned many a wacky wig and moustache for his performance as super spy and master of disguise Simon Templar in director Phillip Noyce’s The Saint.

Clearly trying to capitalize on the success of the Mission Impossible movie which was released just a couple of years prior, The Saint bears very little resemblance to the Roger Moore starring TV spy show (Moore actually makes a cameo toward the end of the flick as the voice of the radio announcer). Co-starring Elizabeth Shue, the film may be quite a generic piece of espionage, but it's enjoyable enough as it features Kilmer during his peak action hero phase.

The Saint opened to mixed reviews but performed well enough, despite never having a sequel. A TV movie/pilot starring Adam Rayner tried to bring back the adventures of Templar in 2017, but to no avail, and a rumoured big-screen reboot with Chris Pine in the title role is currently on the cards.
