10 Times Actors And Directors Disagreed On Their Film's Story

1. Edward Norton And Tony Kaye - American History X

Fast X
New Line Cinema

Edward Norton is known for his layered, intense performances in films such as Fight Club and Primal Fear… as well as being a pain to several directors in his films’ post-production processes. This extreme hands-on approach was best seen in American History X, an unnerving yet gripping look at Neo-Nazi culture in the US.

Despite Norton giving a formidable and awards-worthy performance in the film, his working relationship with infamous director Tony Kaye was chaotic to say the least. At first, the director was not keen on casting Norton as lead Derek Vinyard but ultimately relented due to studio pressure and an inability to find anyone else suitable for the role.

His woes did not end there as Norton began to change the script and later interfered in the film's editing process, adding an extra 20 minutes to the film. Things got so bad for Kaye that he disowned the film, attempted to have his credit removed from the film (insisting that the director's credit be Humpty Dumpty) and did not watch the film until 2007.
