10 Times Actors And Directors Disagreed On Their Film's Story
2. Danny Aiello And Spike Lee - Do The Right Thing
Spike Lee’s 1989 feature is to this day an expertly constructed film with a lot on its mind regarding race relations and racism in the US and tackles its thematic content with Lee’s signature verve and an unflinching approach.
Its climactic scene was the source of much controversy and criticism (that wildly missed the point of said scene) upon its release and has grown over the years to become the film’s signature moment. One less notable but still attention-grabbing aspect about the film however, is the differing views Lee and late actor Danny Aiello had on the latter’s role of Sal.
The director believed that the pizzeria owner was prejudiced (evidenced by his casual use of racial slurs and hostile behaviour towards the likes of Mookie) but Aiello thought that Sal’s deeds shaped who he really was and not his words.
