10 Times Directors Projected Their Strange Fetishses In Mainstream Movies
9. Hayao Miyazaki - Flying Machines
Anyone who's seen a few of Miyazaki's magical anime films, knows he likes to incorporate some odd flying machine into every movie. They are usually key to the plot, and lots of the action happens in the sky. The flying machines aren't exactly conventional planes, either. They vary in size: from one-seaters to flying tandem bikes to humongous flying castles and islands. The machines are all rather magical in their appearance, often with a hint of Steampunk. In Spirited Away (2001), Miyazaki's most famous and Academy Award-winning anime, flying is of major importance to the plot as well. Although Chihiro, the main character, doesn't exactly fly a flying machine, she instead flies a dragon, and she has to find a way to release him from the hands of the evil boss of the Gods' Bathhouse. It may sound a bit out there, but it sure is a beautiful and awesome story.
