10 Times Directors Projected Their Strange Fetishses In Mainstream Movies
8. Martin Scorsese - New York
Martin Scorsese is known to have many trademarks: he prefers to use blondes in his movies (a nod to Hitchcock, it's believed), often references old Westerns and he really likes to use slow motion effects. However, none recur in his movies as often as the setting of New York City. Scorsese was born and raised in the city himself and continues to live there to this day. Scorsese often visualizes the city as a dark place full of (dark) surprises, with danger lurking around every corner - a cesspool of crime as well as the headquarters of many a mafia organization. Scorsese is endlessly fascinated with the dark sides of the city and knows to keep the audience interested in his stories set in New York despite the amount of movies he's already set there. If you'd want to list his movies that were set in New York, you'd better just list the ones that weren't, as that would be a lot less work. The Wolf of Wall Street (2013), is the most recent example of a Scorsese movie set in New York City.
