10 Times Doctor Who Appeared In Movies

Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson is a Doctor Who fan, and was even courted to helm an episode during the Peter Capaldi era.

Unsurprisingly then, he's occasionally slipped Doctor Who easter eggs into his own movies, as was the case with his 1987 feature debut Bad Taste, the film that put him on the map and helped him progress into the Hollywood big leagues.

In the film, Jackson plays a character called Derek, who wears a multicoloured scarf that was intended as an homage to the one worn by Tom Baker's Fourth Doctor.

There's also a line of dialogue speculating that the aliens in the film might have arrived in a telephone box, which is a cheeky wink towards the TARDIS.

Later in his career, Jackson got to work with Seventh Doctor Sylvester McCoy when making the Hobbit trilogy, and as for that Doctor Who episode he supposedly wants to direct? Well, in 2018, he mentioned that he's still open to the possibility - so it might actually happen one day. Fingers crossed.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
