10 Times DVD Extras Lost Their Mind

4. Shakespearian Subtitles - Monty Python And The Holy Grail

All Good Things
EMI Films

There's two things that are absolutely crucial to know when it comes to the gentlemen who comprised the comedy supergroup known as Monty Python. One is that they are very, very funny - and the other is that they are all incredibly intelligent red-brick university graduates.

But why are these things important? Well, they're important because they combine to explain why, when the team made Monty Python and The Holy Grail, they gave the DVD one very important feature - which was titled "Subtitles for People Who Don't Like the Film".

These subtitles replace the actual lines of dialogue in the film with lines from Shakespeare's play Henry IV. Because the team working on this were clearly intimately familiar with the play, they're able to make these Shakespearian replacements actually fit what is being said pretty well, albeit without much of the comedy the regular script provides.

When you think about it, the idea that the Monty Python crew were able to perfectly use parts of Shakespeare's work to create practically another film within their film is both impressive and suitably hilarious.
