10 Times Horror Movie Directors Gave INSANE Performances As Actors

5. Sam Raimi - Intruder

In this campy B-movie slasher, a group of employees are working the night shift at a grocery store, when they're suddenly targeted by a deranged killer.

Even though Intruder is a fairly by-the-numbers slasher, the graphic death sequences are sure to leave an impression. It's genuinely hard not to wince after seeing a head being squashed by a compressor or a victim's face being sliced in half by a bench strimmer.

But another reason why Intruder is remembered fondly is the fact that it's one of the only times Sam Raimi plays a non-cameo acting role. Rather than settling for a background part, the Evil Dead director portrays a central character, a butcher called Randy, who works at the same supermarket as Produce Joe, played by Sam's brother Ted Raimi.

Randy isn't the brightest spark, but his presence adds a playful, almost self-aware vibe to the otherwise tense thriller. And with Raimi's propensity for uber-violence, it's no surprise when his character gets impaled through the eyeball with a meathook.

Considering Intruder was directed by The Evil Dead co-writer, Scott Spiegel, it's understandable why Sam Raimi agreed to take on a more prominent role than usual. Since the cast also includes Sam's brother, Ted, it was the perfect opportunity for the Raimi brothers to work together on-screen and partake in some gnarly special effects.
