10 Times James Bond Movie Franchise Went Too Far

6. Chuckles - Octopussy

During Roger Moore's tenure as 007, it was clear the Bond series was shying away from the grit of the series and focusing more on the campiness. Although this change in direction disappointed many viewers, some appreciated how the franchise didn't take itself too seriously.

But there is a difference between laughing at yourself and turning into a joke. While Bond evades the authorities in Octopussy, he realises he needs a disguise. Being a secret agent, Bond should try to blend into a crowd or hide.

Instead, the master spy dresses up as Chuckles the Sad Clown. (Because, as we all know, clowns are renowned for never standing out.)

In Bond's defence, this strategy could work if he laid low in a circus or a carnival. But at this point, Bond is trying to locate a nuclear warhead, so he's running around in full clown make-up, astonished that his pursuers are able to spot him. As you watch the scene where Bond deactivates an atomic bomb while in full clown garb, you might mistake the film for a spoof like Johnny English rather than James freaking Bond!
